Canadian cryptographer Peter Todd has gone into hiding after being implicated as the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, in an HBO documentary, as reported by Wired on Oct. 22.
The documentary, titled Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, aired on Oct. 9 and alleged to uncover Nakamoto’s true identity after years of speculation.
In an interview, Todd clarified that his claim of being Nakamoto in the film was taken out of context and meant as a joke, denying the accusations made against him.
Following the documentary’s release, Todd expressed concerns for his safety, emphasizing the importance of respecting Nakamoto’s decision to remain anonymous.
Despite Todd’s rebuttals, the filmmaker behind the documentary, Cullen Hoback, defended his narrative, stating the need to identify Nakamoto due to their significant influence in the Bitcoin ecosystem.
However, the documentary’s allegations have faced backlash from the crypto community, with many questioning the evidence linking Todd to Nakamoto.
Todd continues to advocate for privacy and caution against speculating about Nakamoto’s identity, warning of the real-world risks it poses.
