Marathon Digital suggests AI shift after Bitcoin production slowdown in August

Marathon Digital is increasingly focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) as its Bitcoin production experienced a slowdown in August.

On Sept. 5, the BTC mining company announced the appointment of AI experts Janet George and Barbara Humpton to its board, as part of a planned transition.

The new appointees at Marathon have extensive backgrounds in AI, data centers, and energy, driving innovation in complex industries. Humpton, currently the President and CEO of Siemens USA, has integrated AI and industrial data to enhance operations. George, with previous roles at Intel Corporation and other major tech companies, brings a wealth of experience.

Marathon’s chairman and CEO, Fred Thiel, highlighted the importance of AI expertise in supporting the company’s infrastructure expansion focused on AI.

Market observers have noted the potential revenue growth with an AI pivot for Bitcoin miners. VanEck projected significant profits if miners allocate energy capacity to AI computation by 2027.

In August, Marathon’s Bitcoin production slightly decreased, but the company remains focused on enhancing operations and increasing its hash rate towards its 2024 target. Thiel expressed optimism about the transition to immersion containers in their data centers for improved efficiency.
